If The Shoe Phips

The team continues searching the spoils of RP1 for evidence of the Money Pit and the two chests the Oak Island Association reportedly drilled through in 1861. At 114 feet, large amounts of wood are still coming up but no metal. Vanessa reports they are nearing 118 feet when the composition of the material changes. Terry examines the latest grab and says it appears to be in situ, placing them below the level of interest. Rick Lagina calls the hole, and the team prepares to move to another location. The next day, Vanessa tells Rick, Marty Lagina, and Gary Drayton that RP2 has reached 62 feet with the can at 65. As Rick and Gary sort through spoils, Rick pulls out a large wooden dowel. Dowels of this type have been used since at least the 7th century to join timbers in large structures. Alex Lagina observes that a square hammer was used on the piece. Rick believes the dowel could be from the original Money Pit and requests carbon-14 testing.

At the wash plant, Charles and other team members search for clues in the RP1 material. Blake finds a piece of pipe stem, followed by a piece of pottery that Charles shows to Alex for Laird's review. In the swamp, Tom Nolan, Jack Begley, Katya Drayton, and Alan Kostrzewa continue looking for more of the cobblestone pathway. Katya locates another wooden stake, and Jack notes it was cut differently than others found in the area. She then picks up two metal signals in succession: the first produces what appears to be a curved or bent spike, the second what looks like a chisel. Charles and Rick arrive and are shown the finds. Katya then recovers several pieces of leather that appear to come from a shoe or boot. All items will go to the lab. The following day, Jack, Gary, and Alan resume digging. Alan exposes another stake and then hits stones. Jack suspects the cobblestone path may be turning, with cobble leading south and west. When Rick and Tom arrive, Rick asks Steve Guptill to take measurements before the dig continues.

In the War Room, the team agrees that RP1 confirms the historical account of the 1861 collapse, and Rick proposes moving to the opposite side of Shaft 6. The new location is designated RP2, one foot to the northeast of RP1. On Lot 5, Fiona finds a nail and then a piece of a pipe bowl. She and Laird Niven notice an "O" stamped on the fragment. Laird explains that because clay pipes were not reused, this marking will help date the feature, and he asks Fiona to clean the piece for a closer look.

At the Research Center, Rick, Craig, and Gary meet with leather expert Joe Landry to examine the pieces recovered from the swamp. Joe identifies the first piece as the sole of a boot, citing the weight of the leather and the likelihood it was oak-tanned using a solution made from oak bark. He notes the stitching is quite heavy. A second set of pieces he identifies as finer leather, probably from the toe of a military boot. When Gary asks about dating, Joe places the leather between 1830 and 1900, a range that fits the period of Anthony Graves.

In the lab, Rick, Doug Crowell, and Jack meet with Emma Culligan and Laird to hear results on the pipe stem recovered from RP1. Laird identifies it as the largest pipe stem ever found on the island and most likely English. The angle of the fragment matches an example dating to 1680 to 1710. Doug points out that this range coincides with the theory surrounding Sir William Phips and the treasure from the Concepción. Rick calls Marty to relay the findings.
