In 1861 the Oak Island Association sank a shaft 118 ft deep beside the Money Pit and tunnelled into it; the pit's bottom gave way during that work, the collapse that is said to have dropped the "treasure" out of reach. Hamilton's sketch marks the shaft, with "timbers on end", about 25 ft south of the pit and the tunnel running to it, which is why Shaft No. 6 is placed there.
