After re-timbering the Chappell pump shaft in the summer of 1939, Hamilton started a 4 by 5.5 ft tunnel at the 115 ft level in the Hedden shaft, in the compartment between it and the pump shaft. It ran in a general southerly direction just outside the pump shaft; at about 21 ft it turned through 90 degrees and ran along the outside of the southerly side of the pump shaft, where work stopped for the season after 10 ft. Timbered with 2 inch planks braced every 20 inches with 7 by 7 inch hewn spruce. His sketch marks it "Hamilton tunnel @ 118".

Placed from distances and directions in the record.
