In the autumn of 1965 Robert Dunfield stripped about 12 ft of topsoil from the Money Pit area with bulldozers, then dug an open pit with a 70 ton crane: about 100 ft across and nearly 140 ft deep by William Crooker's account, a cone to about 125 ft below the lowered ground on the section in Les MacPhie's 2008 report. Rain and cave-ins stopped it; he refilled the hole and drilled from the backfill in 1966. The Hedden Shaft stood outside the pit and survived; the Chappell Shaft collapsed into it. The 10 ft drop in ground level is why later depths at the Money Pit carry a "post-1966 ground" datum.
