About This Coin

A coin recovered from Lot 5 during Season 11, identified through CT scanning by archaeologist Laird Niven as a Georgius III Rex, dating from 1760 to 1820. Gary Drayton confirmed the coin was the correct size for a penny or halfpenny. At the Interpretive Centre, Laird and Emma Culligan presented the analysis alongside other finds from Lot 5.

Alex Lagina noted the coin was found in the fill of a feature on Lot 5, rather than in undisturbed ground. The coin's date range spans the period immediately before and after the discovery of the Money Pit in 1795, making it consistent with either the original depositors' activities or the earliest searcher operations on the island.
