About This Coin

A coin with Britannia visible on the shield, recovered by Rick Lagina and Gary Drayton on Lot 32 west of the swamp during Season 9. Gary identified the design as English. Two 17th-century British coins had been found on Lot 13 in 2017 by Gary, Marty, Rick, and Dave Blankenship, and this new find supported the theory Scott Clarke presented about Sir William Phips and Andrew Belcher hiding silver on the island in the late 1600s.

The Britannia design on the reverse was introduced during the reign of Charles II in 1672, providing a terminus post quem for the coin. Lot 32 has also yielded a wharf spike, lead cargo bag seal, rock stake identified as a ship anchor, ox shoes, and other artifacts associated with wharf and cargo-handling activity on the island's western shore.
