About This Artifact

A piece of lead identified by Gary Drayton as a coin weight, recovered while searching 10 tons of spoils removed from the round feature on Lot 5 during Season 12. Coin weights were used by merchants and payroll officers to verify that coins met their required weight, serving as a safeguard against clipped or debased currency. Craig Tester was also present during the search.

The lead coin weight was found alongside a button Gary estimated at mid-1600s to mid-1700s. The round feature on Lot 5 has produced a wide range of artifacts associated with commercial and military activity, including coins, buttons, trade beads, and tokens spanning multiple centuries.
