About This Artifact
A small stone cannonball unearthed from more than 100 feet deep in the Money Pit area. Treasure hunter Michael John and surveyor Steve Guptil discovered the projectile in 2020 while searching spoils excavated from the E-5.25 shaft.\r\n\r\nAnalysis confirmed the stone was volcanic in composition, matching material commonly found in the Azores islands of Portugal. The depth at which it was found, well below the surface and within the Money Pit excavation zone, suggests it was deposited long before the 1795 discovery and may have been part of the original works.\r\n\r\nThe find was significant as it placed Portuguese-linked material not just on the surface of Oak Island but deep within the Money Pit itself, connecting the growing body of Portuguese evidence on the surface to whatever lies below.
