About This Artifact

Hand-forged hook recovered by Gary Drayton from the spoils during excavation of the hidden well on Lot 11 that Fred Nolan discovered in the 1970s. Carmen Legge identified the long shank as characteristic of a block and tackle, a device invented by the Greek scientist Archimedes in 250 BC to raise and lower heavy objects. Carmen dated the hook to 1650 to 1690.
