About This Tool
A handle from a pair of shears recovered by metal detection expert Gary Drayton and Peter Fornetti on the Lot 5 shoreline during Season 11 filming. The two were searching the slipway, a feature that aligns with two stone features identified on the lot the previous year, and had already recovered a small wrought iron cribbing spike from the same area. Drayton compared the handle on site to the scissors recovered from beneath the artificial beach at Smith's Cove in the late 1960s, which he characterized as 17th century and Spanish. At the Interpretive Center, Carmen Legge confirmed the piece as a scissor handle, dated it to the 1600s or early 1700s, and told the team it is older than the Smith's Cove pair. No compositional testing of the handle was reported on air, so the identification and the date rest on Legge's visual assessment.
