About This Coin

A heavily encrusted object recovered from Smith's Cove wash plant spoils by Gary Drayton during dismantling of the slipway in Season 6. Gary identified the object as what he believed to be a silver coin, possibly a Spanish one real. Its milled edge places it no older than the 1730s, as milling was introduced to combat coin clipping. The encrusted condition and location alongside the slipway suggest considerable age.

Rick Lagina, Jack Begley, and archaeologist Laird Niven were also present during the search. Heavy equipment operator Billy Gerhardt removed the larger slipway timbers so the team could search beneath the structure. The coin has not been cleaned or definitively identified to a specific denomination or mint.
