About This Artifact

Two large iron spikes recovered by Gary Drayton near the Eye of the Swamp, initially thought to be cribbing spikes similar to those found at Smith's Cove. Blacksmithing expert Carmen Legge identified them as marlinespikes, tools used by sailors from the early 17th century onward for splicing and tying rope on ships. The finding adds to evidence that a large vessel was once present in what is now the swamp.
