About This Artifact

Sherds of annular ware, a refined earthenware decorated with banded horizontal slip lines, recovered along the stone pathway where it runs uphill from the swamp. Archaeologist Dr. Aaron Taylor dated the pieces to the early 1750s, with related material extending into the early 1760s. Annular ware was a common British table and utility ceramic of the mid-eighteenth century. Its presence places domestic activity along the pathway several decades before the 1795 discovery of the Money Pit, consistent with the colonial-era occupation indicated by other ceramics from the same excavation.
