About This Coin

A British copper coin bearing the profile of King George II on the obverse and Britannia seated on a shield holding a trident on the reverse, dated 1771. Gary Drayton recovered the coin on the south shore near the swamp while searching for artifacts with Rick Lagina, Peter Fornetti, and Dan Henskee.

The coin predates the discovery of the Money Pit by 24 years, adding to the body of evidence that human activity on Oak Island extended well before 1795. While the coin does not confirm any specific theory about the island's origins, its 18th-century date and British manufacture are consistent with the pattern of colonial-era artifacts found across the island, including military buttons, musket balls, and other coins from the same period.
