About This Coin

An old copper coin recovered by Gary Drayton from spoils near the stone pathway in the swamp during Season 8. Drayton estimated the coin dated to the late 1600s or early 1700s. The find added to a growing collection of 17th-century coins from the swamp area, including the Spanish 8 maravedis from 1652 and English coins dating to 1673 found on Lot 16.

The stone pathway, excavated under the supervision of archaeologists Dr. Aaron Taylor and Laird Niven, had been revealing evidence of a deliberately constructed road through the swamp, with massive stones laid over a wood cribbing structure. Gary also found an ox shoe nail embedded in the stone structure during the same search, providing further evidence of heavy cargo hauling along the route.
